Während der Fernelmont Contemporary Art Fair im belgischen Chateau Fernelmont vertritt Maria Es mit ihrem Kunstprojekt REFAF (Recycle Fine Art Fair) ihr Heimatland, die Niederlande.
Sie zitiert u.a. Rembrandt und aktualisiert sein Werk unter der Bezeichnung „INTIFADA“.
Die Fernelmont Contemporary Art Fair ist ein jährlich stattfindendes internationales Kunstereignis, an dem Künstler u.a. aus Belgien, Deutschland, Frankreich, Argentinien, Uruguay, New York, Luxemburg und Österreich teilnehmen. Dieses Kunstereignis findet sowohl im als auch rund um das prachtvolle, mittelalterliche Chateau Fernelmont statt.

Rembrandt meets ‘the aboriginal’ - an art project about the desire for a natural death.
Maria Es explores the necessity of giving old art a new contemporary overtone.
Art, a continuous flow of energy that is not about ‘beautiful’ or ‘ugly’.
By adapting old and dated art, Maria Es gives these works a new, necessary, contemporary overtone. The work of art becomes topical once again, people are provoked again, and the art object continues to perform its purpose. For that reason, the old art work must die, so as to be reborn today. By altering elements of the images in the old painting, or by making additions to them, Maria Es radically changes the emotion and experience of the painting whilst keeping the original painting visible, much like remodelling a boy’s coat into a coat for his younger sister.
ReFAF is a radical play with identity. Through this way of recycling, art naturally grows towards a more global art and conception of art, in which Rembrandt will meet ‘the aboriginal’ and the aboriginal will meet ‘Rembrandt’.
ReFAF Recycle Fine Art Fair is a referance to TEFAF, The European Fine Art Fair, the worlds leading art and antiques fair.
